David Ellefson is an American bassist, songwriter, and music entrepreneur best known for his long and influential tenure as the bassist and backing vocalist for the legendary thrash metal band Megadeth. Revered for his powerful, hard-hitting playing style and unwavering dedication to his craft, Ellefson helped define Megadeth’s sound from the band’s earliest days in the 1980s through multiple decades of global success. During his time with Megadeth, he contributed to numerous classic albums including Killing Is My Business… and Business Is Good! (1985), Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying?(1986), Rust in Peace (1990), Countdown to Extinction (1992), Youthanasia (1994), Cryptic Writings (1997), The World Needs a Hero (2001), Thirteen (2011), Super Collider (2013), and Dystopia (2016), earning multiple Grammy nominations and gold and platinum records worldwide.
In addition to his landmark work with Megadeth, Ellefson has participated in a wide range of other musical projects. He has lent his bass playing and songwriting to bands and collaborations including F5, Temple of Brutality, Soulfly(appearing on their Prophecy album), Altitudes & Attitude with Frank Bello of Anthrax, and the supergroup Metal Allegiance alongside Mike Portnoy and Alex Skolnick.
Ellefson has also co-founded bands such as The Lucid, releasing their self-titled debut in 2021, and Dieth, a project blending metal influences with fresh energy, further demonstrating his versatility and creative drive.
Beyond performing, David Ellefson is a multifaceted music professional. He founded the EMP Label Group record label, supports emerging artists, and engages in educational and business endeavors within the music industry.
